Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on how often you are using it and under what circumstances. For example, a forklift that is used 24 hours per day, 7 days per week will need service more often than one used only 2 days per week. In general, however, we recommend a lube service at least every 500 hours or every three months – whichever comes first.
Many businesses choose used forklifts because they offer significant cost savings compared to buying new — without compromising on performance or reliability. At Boman Forklift, we ensure every used forklift is thoroughly inspected and reconditioned. It’s a smart, budget-friendly option for companies looking to maximize value.
Of course, if your operation requires the latest technology or you simply prefer brand-new equipment, we also offer a full selection of new forklifts with manufacturer warranties. Whether you choose new or used, Boman Forklift is committed to helping you find the right solution for your needs and budget.
The right choice between electric and LPG forklifts depends on your specific application, environment, and operational priorities.
Electric forklifts are ideal for indoor use and enclosed spaces. They produce zero emissions, run quietly, and typically have lower operating costs over time, since electricity is more economical than fuel and electric models require less maintenance. They’re a great choice for warehouses, food storage, and other clean or noise-sensitive environments.
On the other hand, LPG forklifts offer more power for heavy-duty applications and are well-suited for both indoor and outdoor use. They can be refueled quickly, making them ideal for operations that run multiple shifts or can’t afford downtime for charging. LPG models also tend to have lower upfront costs than electric forklifts.
At Boman Forklift, we offer both electric and LPG options and can help you determine which type is the best fit for your business.
A Planned Maintenance (PM) service is a scheduled inspection and service that Boman offers designed to keep your forklift running safely and efficiently — while helping you avoid unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs.
During a PM service, our certified technicians perform a thorough check of your equipment, including fluid levels, filters, brakes, tires, battery (for electric forklifts), and other critical components. We also lubricate key parts, make minor adjustments, and identify any signs of wear or potential issues before they become major problems.
Regular PM service not only extends the life of your forklift, but also helps ensure compliance with safety standards and minimizes downtime — keeping your operation productive and your costs under control. It’s fast (typically takes 45 minutes), cost-effective, and less expensive than emergency repair calls — making it a smart investment in your equipment and productivity.
Forklift tires don’t follow a fixed replacement schedule — instead, their lifespan depends on factors like usage hours, floor conditions, load weights, and how the forklift is operated.
As a general guideline:
- Cushion tires typically last between 2,000–3,000 hours.
- Pneumatic tires may last a bit longer than cushion tires when used outdoors on rougher terrain.
However, you should consider replacing your forklift tires when:
- The wear line (or safety line) is reached.
- Chunks, cracks, or flat spots appear.
- Ride quality declines or the forklift vibrates during operation.
- Tire height is reduced, which can impact stability and safety.
Worn tires can lead to reduced traction, poor handling, increased stress on the forklift, and higher risk of operator injury or load damage. That’s why regular inspections — often during your Planned Maintenance (PM) service — are important to catch wear early.
If you’re unsure about the condition of your tires, Boman Forklift’s service team can inspect them and recommend whether it’s time for a replacement.
You are required to have a standard state driver’s license as well as on the job operator training to drive a forklift. In addition, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) also requires that each forklift operator undergo Forklift Safety Training. This training ensures that each operator can drive a forklift in a safe manner that will not endanger co-workers or company property. OSHA will conduct surprise inspections from time to time and fines can range up to $7000.00 for non-compliance. For more information, refer to OSHA’s website at www.osha.gov. Boman Forklift offers Forklift Certification at either our location or yours. Please call us for more information.
No, OSHA generally prohibits modifications to forklift forks, including drilling holes, without the manufacturer’s prior written approval.
Here’s why and what you should do instead:
- Compromised Safety and Standards: Drilling or welding on forks compromises their structural integrity and can lead to dangerous situations and accidents. Forklift modifications without manufacturer approval also violate industry standards.
- Manufacturer Approval Required: OSHA requires that modifications affecting a forklift’s capacity and safe operation have the manufacturer’s prior written approval. This includes attachments and changes that might alter the forklift’s function or safety features.
When 10% of the fork heel is worn.
A yard ramp creates a temporary incline from the ground to the container, allowing forklifts to drive directly inside. It’s a safe and efficient way to access containers at ground level.
Not necessarily. If your forks are only occasionally too short for certain loads, you may not need to buy new forks. A more cost-effective and flexible solution is to use fork extensions.
Fork extensions are:
- Removable sleeves that slide over your existing forks.
- Ideal for occasional use with longer or oversized loads.
- Available in different lengths and capacities.
- A great way to increase fork reach without permanently modifying your forklift.
- It’s important to note fork extensions should never exceed 1.5 times the length of your existing forks.
